Project Outline

The aim of GLASS seeks to improve and automate BIOM’s technology

This technology is the first demonstration of how a bio-inspired AR nano-texture on the glass surface can be attained with just the use of a laser beam, which is conceived as an environmentally friendly-Green manufacturing process.

The technology is developed to solve the problem of light reflection which is evident on every glass materials and targets applications in the specialized optics and everyday electronic devices.

The problem

Light Reflection

Reflection on glass surfaces limit the performance of electronic devices, optics, solar panels and eyewear.

It is an annoying effect that is primarily mitigated with anti-reflective coatings.

The technology

Ultrafast laser pulses that induce hierarchical self-organized nano surface structures inspired by natural archetypes.

GLASS technology is a novel technique that can nano-texture glass with laser pulses by manipulation complex self-organization phenomena that take place upon irradiation. The process can be materialized on potentially all kinds of glass substrates.

Nanotexturing has a tremendous effect on the materials properties, creating a pronounced anti-reflection, an anti-fogging effect.

The project objective

Following the maturity of the technology, the GLASS consortium aims to completely automate the process and provide a laser machine which will be able to process glass with the push of a button.
